How to Convert from UofL Email to Gmail

  • New GA's start off with 3 accounts (go here to get started):
    • typical student (cardmail) account
      • studentID@louisville.edu
    • alias (typically abbreviated first letter of first name, period, and last name)
      • j.smith@louisville.edu
    • exchange account (because you are technically a part time employee)
      • studentID@exchange.louisville.edu
    • more info @ http://louisville.edu/email/

  • Exchange Account (@exchange.louisville.edu) to Gmail

    • Send mail from Gmail
      • Gmail > Settings > Accounts and Import > Send Mail As > Add another email address you own > (Treat as Alias, SMTP server: SMTP.louisville.edu, Port: 587, TLS)

    • Receive mail to Gmail
      • https://exchange.louisville.edu/owa/ (studentID@exchange.louisville.edu)> Options > See All Options > Organize E-Mail > Inbox Rules > New Rule > When the message arrives, and: > [apply to all messages] > Do the following: > Redirect the message to... > enter gmail address


  • Cardmail Account (@louisville.edu) to Gmail

    • Send mail from Gmail
      • Gmail > Settings > Accounts and Import > Send Mail As > Add another email address you own > (Treat as Alias, SMTP server: SMTP.louisville.edu, Port: 587, TLS)

    • Receive mail to Gmail
      • cardmail.louisville.edu (studentID@cardmail.louisville.edu)> Options > See All Options > Organize E-Mail > Inbox Rules > New Rule > When the message arrives, and: > [apply to all messages] > Do the following: > Redirect the message to... > enter gmail address


***Make sure that after setting up SMTP settings under "Accounts and Import" you choose "When replying to a message: Reply from the same address the message was sent to.***



  • Organize incoming mail from UofL account to Gmail

    • Create a filter/label/inbox for your UofL mail in Gmail
      • Gmail > Search bar > enter your email addresses separated by "OR"  and spaces into the "To" form field > Search > Creat filter with this search > Apply the label > New Label: (enter "@louisville.edu") > check box "Also apply to [#] conversations" > Create filter
        • e.g., [studentID@louisville.edu OR studentID@exchange.louisville.edu OR alias@louisville.edu]

  • List of Listservs:
    • Formatted to auto-add to Gmail contacts when copied and pasted in the "TO" field
